[ad]After a reader commented how infrequently (read that as “never”) I cover female rappers at Rappers.org, I realized that really, I haven’t given much love to these sistas.
So who better to start it off with than Missy Elliot (who incidentally, started off with a group named “Sista“)?
She’s the only female rapper to have had six *certified* platinum records. Tell that to Soulja Boy, who probably has sold more ringtones than albums the past year.
I first heard Missy on the Supa Dupa Fly album, on the song “The Rain“. This was her first outing as a solo rapper. Prior to that, she was on the production side of things, working alongside Timbaland. Timbaland and Missy, incidentally, have a long history together, working together in 1990 when Timbaland was still known as Timothy Mosley. Together, they created a shitload of hits for everybody from Sean “Puffy” Combs/P.Diddy/Whatever He Calls Himself These Days to Aaliyah.
Missy was also the singular force behind the insanely catch, insanely over used dance anthem “Get Ur Freak On“. Seriously, there was a point post 2001 when you couldn’t go to a single club without hearing this song and that crazy crazy infectious beat all the time.
So what’s she up to lately?
She’s got an album coming up just around the block – and its named Block Party, by the way (which is also the name of a very very good British alt rock band) which has some superstar producers on roll – Timbaland, Pharell, T-Pain, etcetra. The album contains the hit single “Ching-a-Ling”. Expect the album to be out in late 2009.
Nonethless. Missy, we at Rappers.org love you. A whole lot.
