Most of you will know that the hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs started out as the rapper “Puff Daddy” when he recorded his first commercial vocal in 1997 but do you know why he changed his stage name?

He was apparently called ‘Puff’ to reflect his ‘huff and puff’ mood when he got upset.

In 2001, after a weapons and bribery charge, he changed his name from ‘Puff Daddy’ to ‘P.Diddy’. In 2005, he changed it again from ‘P.Diddy’ to just ‘Diddy’.

Unfortunately, he was unable to use the name Diddy in the UK where he is still known as P.Diddy.

For his non-musical interests, such as acting, he uses his real name Sean Combs or ‘Sean John’ for his clothing lines.

His birth name is Sean John Combs.

Rap is about rhyming. Period. If you can’t string together a few solid rhymes, you can’t be a rapper. Sure, there are plenty of rappers who have become quasi famous on less than stellar rhyming skills, but these guys get little respect or success. The best rappers out there (Jay-Z, Eminem, Tupac, 50 Cent, etc.) all have killer rhyming skills.

Thus, when aspiring rappers talk about getting rap dictionaries to make rhyming a bit “easier”, I naturally balk. A rap dictionary is literally ‘cheating’ in my book. It kills the very soul of the music. It says, “I have no skills or interest in working hard to be a rapper. I just want a quick fix solution that will make me semi-famous”. Such a hack mentality can’t take you very far in the rap game.

Of course, I’m not saying that you need not consult a dictionary at all. A strong vocabulary is, after all, a cornerstone of rap. But for that, I would really recommend a regular dictionary over a rap dictionary. This is for the reason mentioned above, and because rap dictionaries tend to be very genre specific and lack the killer words that can make or break a song.

Most importantly, if you follow the rap dictionary too closely, you will start sounding like the hundreds of other rappers who took the advice of the dictionary. Instead of sounding original and fresh, you will sound like another soldier in an army of rapping clones. Surely you don’t want such a reputation to be associated with you or your art.

The best rhymes involve words that are complicated and are not commonly found in most rap dictionaries. Longer words with more syllables make for great rhymes, but are unfortunately missing in such dictionaries.

Try this out: pick up a dictionary (a regular one) and write down a dozen words you have never even heard before, let alone know the meaning of. Make sure that they are multiple syllable words such as “megalomaniac” or “metamorphosis“. Try to find ryhmes for these words and include them in your song. You will be surprised how the includsion of a few such words can make your song stand out completely.

The San Francisco Examiner has a nice opinion piece today by Gregory Kane about whether hip hop, rap, and black centric movies (Kane chooses Tyler Perry’s “Medea Goes to Jail” as a reference in the article) promote racial stereotypes.

I am not black, so perhaps I am not the best judge of such a dividing issue. But being brown skinned, I can look at racial stereotypes from an outside perspective – from a viewpoint that is neither black, nor white.

I personally find that its only the rare art or artist that can transcend stereotypes. Nearly every movie, song, album, book, has some form of stereotype or the other. You have the dumb college quarterback, the recent immigrant who struggles with English – few artists can resist the temptation to use a stereotype, rather than put in more effort to create a truly unique character.

I am reminded of Robert Downey Jr.’s character in Tropic Thunder. Downey plays Kirk Lazarus – a 5 time Academy Award winning Australian actor, who undergoes a skin darkening procedure to play an African-American character. Downey mocks the use of stereotypes in movies by making his character an over the top racial stereotype.

Watch this video and you will know what I am talking about:

The Tropic Thunder filmmakers have done a tremendous job of deconstructing and mocking the racial stereotypes. Gregory Kane in his article references “Medea Goes to Jail” – a simple, stupid comedy that depends on racial stereotypes for its laughs, and not on innovative dialogue or truly funny situations.

And that, I think is the whole issue: filmmakers, artists, musicians taking the minimum effort route and creating stereotypes instead of putting in the work to make truly memorable characters. When someone uses a stereotype, I attribute that to creative lazyness, and nothing else.

What do you opine, my readers? Does hip hop really, truly promote racial stereotypes?

There was a time, not too long ago, when all the cool kids played guitar and had a rock band.

They hung out in basements or abandoned warehouses, grew their hair long and (gasp!) feathered them. If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you knew at least one kid in your school who had a band or played the guitar and got all the chicks.

In the 80s, this was not considered gay. Really.

Rap, in the 80s, was still emerging from the underground. Its unfortunate that what did emerge from the underground int he late 80s was kiddie rap like MC Hammer.

Can you blame me now when I say 80s rappers sucked?

Then came the 90s with Nirvana and the avalanche of alternative rock it brought along with it. Alternative rock, for all its worth, really gave a huge fillip to hip-hop’s mainstreaming with the emergence of some really awesome rappers (nod to Public Enemy), and some really shitty rock bands (here’s looking at you, Fred Durst). Result: rappers suddenly became the new ‘edgy’ mainstream, while all rockers could sing about was their sad, sad, misfortune at not being able to steal their elder sister’s black mascara.

You had some awesome rappers come out during this time: Jay-Z, Snoop, Nelly (oh, well!), and company. But most importantly, you also had a white rapper who was actually good (no, its not Vanilla Ice).

Prove me if I’m wrong, but Eminem’s arrival really set the stage for the way hip-hop completely exploded rock off the charts. You might hate him but you can’t deny that the guy can make up a mean rhyme. But more importantly, he was plenty controversial and had a style that was more accessible to non-rap listeners (read ‘white people’).

Of course, rap then entered its douchy, money grabbing, oversized gold medallion wearing phase. But rock at this stage was still reeling from the 90s and there was no major single band that could command the kind of attention that rappers like Eminem or Jay-Z could (at least no band not in their 40s). The 2000s also saw rock becoming excessively wimpy with indie-rock and its hippie stepchildren becoming more and more popular. Any competition that could throw rap off its popular perch (no, we won’t consider pop music as a competitor) went along the flower trail.

My point: its amazing to see how cool and mainstream rap has become. You can say that that’s the fate of anything that started underground. But you just can’t help feel that there’s a certain ‘edginess’ lacking in the rappers of today. Clearly, most of them still haven’t gotten over the gold plated Cadillac phase. There was a historic even in black history this year with Obama being elected El Presidente, but it was really disheartening to see any really good politically charged rap songs. I would’ve loved to hear Public Enemy of the 80s come out and sing about Obama. But all that I could get was Will.I.Am and his idiot moniker on a stage.

But hey, all the cool kids still rap!
